Penny Yellen has been named executive director of the Family Life Center in Guilford. She previously was a clinical social worker at the West Haven Mental Health Center. She has extensive experience in programming including the implementation of an elder-abuse resource center in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Wiggin & Dana has announced the expansion of its franchise litigation practice with the addition of a new partner, Joseph Schumacher. Schumacher most recently served as partner with Fisher Schumacher & Zucker of Philadelphia.

The Shubert Performing Arts Center has named Robin Andreoli director of advancement. She previously worked with the New Haven-based International Festival of Arts & Ideas and Long Wharf Theatre. Andreoli also directed corporate sponsorship and grants programs for the Mashantacket Pequot Museum & Research Center and worked for the New Haven Office of Cultural Affairs, where she managed the city's outdoor events as well as sponsorship and media services. She holds a MBA and bachelor's degree from the University of New Haven. Andreoli will direct the Shubert's sponsorship, annual fund, Corporate Club and members programs.

Michael J. Giampaoli has been named dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Bridgeport. At UB since 1996, he previously served as the university's director of distance education. Giampaoli holds a bachelor's degree in business science from Pace University and an MBA from the UB. Before coming to the UB he was the publisher and chief executive office of Paragon House, an academic trade and textbook publisher.

The Institutes for Bioanalytics in Branford has appointed Jan W.F. Wasley vice president of research. Wasley, whose scientific background is in organic and medicinal chemistry, has 35 years' experience in the design, discovery and development of novel drugs for a wide array of diseases. He previously was a vice president at Neurogen Corp. Wasley has also formed SimPharma, whose first product, the “Drug Discovery Game,” is a simulation/game for instructional purposes. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham, England.

David R. Vance of Cheshire has been appointed manager of academic technology instructional services at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. He will conduct workshops for training faculty, staff and students to use various software products. Vance is also an adjunct philosophy professor at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. He holds two degrees in philosophy, a master's from the University of Washington and a bachelor's degree from the College of Idaho.

Joseph Ruberton, director of facilities at Quinnipiac University, has receive the Meritorious Service Award from the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers. The award is the association's highest honor for individual service, recognizing outstanding contribution to the profession, association and the recipient's institution. Ruberton came to Quinnipiac in 1973 as assistant director of facilities and was promoted to director in 1981. He served as vice president of the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (also known as Association of Physical Plant administrators) from 1997 to 2000 and as president of the association's eastern region in 1995.

The New Haven architectural firm of Herbert S. Newman & Partners have named Peter S. Conrad and Brian McFarland associates. Conrad received his M.A. from the Yale University School of Architecture, joining Newman in 1999. McFarland was educated at the Pratt Institute, coming to the firm in 2000.

James Bundy, artistic director of the Great Lakes Theater Festival and adjunct professor of theater at Case Western Reserve University, has been named dean of the Yale School of Drama and artistic director of the Yale Repertory Theatre. He will serve as dean for a term of five years, replacing Stan Wojewodski Jr., who has occupied that position for a decade. Bundy received an A.B. degree from Harvard and trained in acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After a career as an actor, appearing at Berkeley Repertory Theater, Magic Theater, San Jose Repertory Theater and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, he came to the Yale School of Drama, where he earned an MFA in directing in 1995. Bundy was also associate producing director of the Acting Company and served as managing director of the Cornerstone Theater Co.

Denise M. Balisciano has joined H. Pearce Co., Realtors as a residential sales associate in the company's Wallingford regional office. Balisciano, who has 15 years experience in the customer service industry, previously owned and operated her own real estate agency, specializing in rental properties.

Diego B. Nunez Jr. has been named chairman of the department of radiology of Saint Raphael Healthcare System. Nunez, who completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Saint Raphael's in 1976, was most recently director of the Emergency Radiology Section of Radiology at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. He has been a visiting professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School and a professor of radiology and surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He earned his M.D. from Universidada Central e Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela; interned at Carney Hospital, Boston University School of Medicine; and completed a cardiovascular radiology/special procedures fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital. In June he earned a master's of public health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals of Cheshire has announced that David R. Burton of the Scripps Research Institute has been appointed chairman of the company's Scientific Advisory Board. Burton is currently a professor in the department of immunology at Scripps, where he has served in his present role since 1991. He earned a bachelor's in chemistry from Oxford University and his Ph.D. from Lund University, Sweden in physical biochemistry. Previous experience includes the department of biochemistry at the University of Oxford, where he served as a medical research council training fellow. He became lecturer in biochemistry at the University of Sheffield in 1981 and senior lecturer in 1987.

Milind Deshpande has joined Achillion Pharmaceuticals of New Haven as vice president of chemistry. Previously Deshpande was associate director of lead discovery and early discovery chemistry at the Pharmaceutical Research Institute at Bristol-Myers Squibb,where he managed the identification of new clinical candidates to treat infections and neurological diseases. He also served on the faculty of Boston University Medical School. Deshpande was awarded a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Ohio University.

Hank Mandel has been named executive vice president of People's Bank's new organizational effectiveness division. Previously Mandel was senior vice president of organization effectiveness and strategic planning. He joined People's in 1998 as vice president of the bank's credit-card division. He previously owned and operated Creative Counsel, a consulting firm that designed, implemented and managed product, brand, human-resources and corporate positioning programs.
