On the other hand, we have nothing but praise and admiration for Schiavone's September 25 hiring of a crew to remove a century-old, ten-ton railroad trestle from the bottom of the West River.
The 28-foot hunk of steel had impeded navigation of that part of the river for more than two decades. Peter Davis, the city's river keeper, said he had spent much of his 14-year tenure on the job trying to get the bridge removed. He repeatedly appealed to city and state officials for help - all to no avail.
What we had here was a bunch of bureaucrats rumbling for years over something that it cost $1,200 to do, Schiavone said. There's probably 500 things in the city just as easy to do.
Campaign stunt? Of course. Schiavone's mayoral campaign was paying the workers from the Morelle Corp. of Wallingford to do the job. But it was a stunt that successfully accomplished a legitimate municipal need.
Julio Gonzalez, Mayor John DeStefano Jr.'s campaign manager, called the event bizarre.
What is bizarre to us is that it took two decades to accomplish. And then that it would be belittled for purely partisan purposes by a representative of the person who ought to have accomplished it in the first place.
