NEW HAVEN - The Yale Biotechnology Student Interest Group will stage a Yale & New Haven Biotechnology Reception September 28 at the New Haven Lawn Club, 193 Whitney Avenue, from 2:30 to 7 p.m. The theme for the event is The Future of Genomics.
The event will be keynoted by Leroy Hood, founder, director, and president of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, Wash. Hood is one of the world's leading scientists in molecular biotechnology and genomics.
Following Hood's remarks a panel of biotechnology professionals will discuss the value of genomics. With a fully sequenced genome, what do scientists do next, and how can companies and society capture the value of the sequence? The panel will include two local biotechnology executives: Gualberto Ruaño, CEO of Genaissance Pharmaceuticals, and Jim Golden, director of bioinformatics at CuraGen Corp. Also on the panel will be two venture capitalists: Gus Lawlor of HealthCare Ventures and Douglas Fambrough of Oxford Bioscience Partners. Joining them will be Meirav Chovav, managing director of U.S. biotechnology equity research for Credit Suisse First Boston. The discussion will be moderated by Yale School of Management economics professor Sharon Oster.
The Yale Biotechnology Student Interest Group, a student-run organization, has more than 500 members from the Yale graduate programs. Its mission is to bring together Yale graduate students and post-doctoral fellows studying the biological sciences, business, medicine, public health, and law for educational and career-related opportunities relating to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The group also conducts management-consulting projects for regional biopharmaceutical firms, investment analysis projects and due-diligence analysis for venture capital firms.
The event is free and open to the public.
