BRANFORD - Speaking of genomics, the September 17 Fortune magazine survey of “The 40 Richest Americans Under [Age] 40” has at least one local figure you can now envy: CuraGen founder and CEO Jonathan M. Rothberg, age 38, reputed to be worth $168 million personally. The boy genius ranks No. 37 on the Fortune list, just behind rubber-faced actor and film producer Jim Carrey ($171 million), but ahead of No. 40 Tiger Woods ($160 million).
Fortune notes that boy genius Rothberg has two master's degrees and a Ph.D., and thus got a late start in business. “I would be on the top of your rich list if I had skipped graduate school,” he says, modestly. No. 1 on the Fortune list is Dell Computer's Michael Dell, 36, whom the magazine says is personally worth $16.3 billion.
