Following up on the success of last year's revived Southern Connecticut Business Expo, the event returns to Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New Haven October 3. It will be presented by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce.
More than 200 companies are expected to exhibit wares ranging from hand-held computers to forklifts. Admission is free to attendees.
The event will be keynoted by Wolfgang Plischke, executive vice president of Bayer AG and president of the Bayer Corp.'s North American pharmaceutical division, headquartered in West Haven. Plischke will speak at 1:30 p.m.
The event will kick off with a 7:15-8:45 a.m. breakfast featuring an analysis of the state's economic climate from economist Donald Klepper-Smith, as well as a keynote address from Rita Zangari, deputy commissioner of the state's Department of Economic & Community Development. Admission to the breakfast will be $35.
A key element of the expo will be a series of high-profile seminars and workshops throughout the day, collectively entitled Flashpoint, produced by Business New Haven. Seminar subjects include E-merging Connecticut Business, Communicate Effectively, What People Think, Touring Connecticut, Family Business, Develop Connecticut, Opportunity in the Region and Ahead of the Curve.
Panelists include some of the state's most dynamic business people, from real-estate innovator Vbrick Ceo Fred Geyer to Shelton uber-developer Robert Scinto to Pilot Pen tennis tourney head Anne Worcester to Mohegan Sun executive vice president Mitchell Grossinger Etess.
In conjunction with these panel discussions will be a How-To series of workshops throughout the day. How-To subjects include financing a small business, doing business with federal, state and local governments, writing a business plan, using sports marketing to build your brand, using online public-relations techniques and understanding how news media cover companies, corporate news and events.
How-To session leaders include Marie Record, Connecticut district director the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Al Pirozzoli, president of the Silverman Group, speaking on Sports marketing.
The exhibition space will open at 8:30 a.m. The event concludes with the chamber's Business After Hours from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
About 4,500 people attended the 2000 Southern Connecticut Business Expo, breathing new life into an event that had gone dormant five years before.
Like its predecessor last year, the 2001 Southern Connecticut Business Expo will be produced by the West Hartford-based Event Management.
