The state's Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) has been named winner of the 2001 Phoenix Award for New England. Given annually to one project in each of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ten regions nationwide, the awards recognize and showcase groups that transform abandoned industrial areas containing environmentally hazardous substances into productive new uses. The award specifically cites the development of the North Colony Street Industrial Park in Meriden. The DECD, city of Meriden, IT Automotive and the state's Department of Environmental Protection worked together for two years to complete the project. It represents a combined investment of more than $32 million and the reclamation of 15.5 acres.
