MILFORD - Subway Restaurants is now the largest restaurant chain in the country. The privately held chain, started by Fred DeLuca in 1965, has more shops than the golden arches, according to the company. As of December 31, there are 148 more sandwich shops than there are those of McDonald's. Subway opened 904 units last year, bringing the total order to 13,247 shops. McD's opened 295.
The numbers include satellite locations such as shops at gas stations, sports arenas, schools and other smaller outlets. McDonald's, which generates more than $40 billion in annual sales, still far outsells Subway and surpasses the sandwich shop in global presence.
Both restaurants are still far behind the world's largest restaurant company, Tricon, which operates 30,326 Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell locations worldwide.
