New Haven - Genaissance Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: GNSC), a leader in the study of human gene variation and its application to the development of personalized medicines, has announced that the enrollment goal of 600 patients has been achieved for the largest prospective personalized-medicine clinical trial ever conducted. The STRENGTH (Statin Response Examined by Genetic HAP Markers) study is designed to link specific markers of human genetic variation to clinical response so that physicians can decide which cholesterol-lowering drug is best for each patient based on her own DNA. The STRENGTH study enrolled 600 patients at 60 medical centers in the U.S., with 150 patients enrolled in each of the four treatment arms. A full analysis of the study is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2002. The four drugs under study are: Lipitor (atorvastatin), Zocor (simvastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin) and Baycol (cerivastatin). These drugs had sales of nearly $13 billion in 2000 and were prescribed for approximately ten million patients nationwide.
