ROCKY HILL - Connecticut Innovations Inc. (CII), the state's leading investor in high technology, announced that it will award $1.2 million for applied research projects to be conducted jointly by Connecticut companies and the University of Connecticut. The quartet of companies will provide personnel, cash, equipment and services valued at an additional $700,000. The four projects were selected for scientific merit and commercialization potential by more than 60 technical and industry experts for CII's annual Yankee Ingenuity Competition, which attracted 16 research proposals. The competition promotes technological innovation by encouraging partnerships between Connecticut businesses and Connecticut colleges and universities. Funds support applied high-technology research and development projects that lead to marketable products or services. Projects must demonstrate the potential to contribute to long-term economic growth in Connecticut. Participating companies are Jeneric/Pentron in Wallingford; Oxford Performance Materials in New Britain; Visicon Inspection Technologies in Norwalk; and Evergen Biotechnologies in Storrs. The four projects involve the applied research and development of advanced reinforced thermoplastics for dental applications, proton-exchange membranes based on poly (etherketone) for fuel-cell applications, a three-dimensional scanning camera and technologies to clone cattle to improve milk production in developing countries.
