NEW HAVEN - Merchants in the Broadway district are cheering at the prospects of having J. Crew as a neighbor. The Yale-owned retail district has been reborn with the addition of new chain stores, the most recent being Urban Outfitters, which opened in March. J. Crew will be the newest tenant in the district when it opens a 6,240-square-foot store in February. Carrying classic American clothes for men and women, the New York-based store was launched in 1983 and built its brand through catalogue sales. The first J. Crew store opened in 1989 in the South Street Seaport in New York. Since then the retailer has expanded to 157 outlet locations across the country. New Haven will be one of only two dozen cities where J. Crew has placed a storefront site rather than a mall location.
