TRENTON, N.J. - At the Journal Register Co. (NYSE: JRC), parent company of the New Haven Register, pro forma advertising revenues for the five weeks ended August 5 were $25.2 million, compared to $25.8 million for the five weeks ended July 30.
Excluding acquisitions, JRC's advertising revenues for the seventh period were down 7.9 percent as compared to pro forma advertising revenues for the prior year period.
Classified revenues for the seventh period, excluding the acquisitions, were down 8.9 percent as compared to pro forma classified revenues for the prior year period, reflecting soft employment advertising, which was down 18.1 percent. Classified automotive revenues were down 2.2 percent over a year ago, while classified real estate revenues climbed 12.4 percent over the same period in 2000. Retail revenues were down 9.6 percent compared to the year-before period, impacted by out-of-business losses, particularly in New England.
Advertising revenues at the New Haven Register were down 9.2 percent. Retail revenues in New Haven were soft, reflecting continued out-of-business losses from several retailers. Also in New Haven, classified revenues reflected the lowest year-over-year decline since the first period of 2001, down 10.0 percent. National advertising revenues, however, were up 22.6 percent.
