Friend, partner, economist, cheerleader - and, above all, family man - Fabio Sampoli battled cancer for half his life.
On July 18 cancer won the battle.
Despite war raging within his body, Sampoli was one of the cheeriest and most considerate human beings we have been privileged to know. As longtime executive vice president of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, Sampoli was one of the best friends the manufacturing industry had in this city.
It was only just this year that he achieved a longtime dream by becoming a manufacturing CEO himself with the fledgling Viola Audio Laboratories, which manufactures high-end audio components. After a dozen years in the non-profit hive, Sampoli was eager to get out and mix it up in the entrepreneurial world.
"This life-force" is what his former chamber boss, Matthew Nemerson, called him, and Sampoli was eager to attack the second half of his career with characteristic vigor, excitement and wonder. Then his own life-force failed him.
Another Nemerson observation: "Here was a guy who had nothing but concern for other people." Dying from the inside out, he thought of others before he thought of himself.
Sampoli always put the welfare of his community first. There are lots worse things one could say about a fellow.
Rest well, old friend.
