WOODBRIDGE - Gale Group, a unit of the Thomson Corp.'s Thomson Learning division, has acquired Blackbirch Press, a publisher of books for children in grades K-6.
Blackbirch will be integrated into Gale's Greenhaven editorial operations in San Diego, Calif. Greenhaven consists of K-12 non-fiction lines under the Greenhaven Press, KidHaven Press and Lucent Books imprints. Blackbirch will remain a separate imprint under Bruce Glassman, who was named publisher of Blackbirch Press and Gale publishing vice president. Glassman's parents, Richard and Sonja Glassman, founded Blackbirch in 1990; the younger Glassman was its most recent president.
Gale says it plans to invest in product development, expanding the Blackbirch product line and the variety of media in which products are available, particularly electronic media.
The Gale Group includes such brands as Macmillan Reference USA, Charles Scribner's Sons, Primary Source Microfilm, UXL, Greenhaven Press, Lucent Books and Thorndike Press. The Toronto-based Thomson Corp., with 2000 revenues of approximately $6 billion, recently divested most of its U.S. newspaper properties, including the Bridgeport-based Connecticut Post.
