NEW HAVEN - The New Haven Public Education Fund (NHPEF) has cited businesses and their employees as well as schools and teachers who have performed exemplary work on behalf of the city's public schools.
We try to bring businesses into the schools to see what the schools are about and how they can help, explains NHPEF Executive Director Lydia Bornick. Education doesn't happen in a vacuum. Local businesses can offer experiences and exposure to careers.
The Partners in Education awards program is part of the NHPEF school/business partnership program. Founded in 1992, it now brings more than 80 local organizations together with New Haven public schools.
The awards program cited individual employee volunteers Jack Crane and Mini Minelli. A retiree from the Olin Corp., Crane has organized volunteers to participate in the schools' Citywide Science Fair Project, for mentoring students who could not otherwise participate in the science fair.
Minelli, a vice president of community affairs with First Union National Bank, which is partnered with West Hills Magnet School, teaches finance skills to eighth-graders and invited several students to shadow her at work during the public schools' career week.
Corporate Partnership awards went to the architectural firm of Cesar Pelli & Associates and the New Haven Register. The Pelli firm developed a career program for eight students from the Hyde Leadership School. Students toured job sites and worked at Pelli to design a construction project, learning about architecture, construction and engineering.
Partnered with Troup Magnet Academy of Sciences, the Register was cited for providing free newspapers and for printing the school newspaper.
The Teacher Parnership Award went to Joyce Listro of the Sheriden Academy, partnered with Yale-New Haven Hospital. Students in Listro's media-literacy class produced a video at the hospital illustrating various career opportunities at a major health-care facility.
