NEW HAVEN - Organizers of the 2001 Southern Connecticut Business Expo have announced that Wolfgang Plischke, president of Bayer Pharmaceuticals, North America, will keynote the October 3 event at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New Haven.
The Southern Connecticut Business Expo is presented by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, and produced by the West Hartford-based Event Management. In addition to a broad array of exhibitors, the expo will feature a wide-ranging educational component.
As it did for the 2000 event, Business New Haven has organized workshops and speakers for the event. The educational component of the event will be called Flashpoint.
According to BNH Publisher Mitchell Young: A 'flashpoint' is the intersection where eruption into significant action or creation occurs. We think the dynamic of this year's event, in particular the truly extraordinary business people and ideas they will present, will create just such a 'flashpoint' for the business environment of the region, he said.
According to Young, Combining presentations and discussions, 'Flashpoint' will showcase many of Connecticut's most innovative and creative entrepreneurs, companies and business leaders. We have engaged a group of successful, revolutionary and in-the-know speakers and workshop leaders. These individuals will not only bring a wide variety of ideas, but the willingness to share their vision and experience.
In addition to Flashpoint workshops and speakers, the 2001 Business Expo will present more than 200 exhibitors and a career fair for business professionals presented by the Connecticut Department of Labor and sponsored by WTNH-TV's employment and career Web site, known as Jobs For You.
Our theme this year is 'Expect the Unexpected' - and that's just what we are creating, said Marc P. Sherer, president of Event Management. We are raising the level of expectation for this show, which will be the single largest business event in the history of Connecticut. Attendees will learn more, see more, and do more than at any business event before.
Highlighting the event will be keynote speaker Plischke, executive vice president of Bayer Corp. Plischke oversees Bayer's North American pharmaceutical business, which includes the company's pharmaceutical, biological and biotechnology businesses.
According to Young, Flashpoint will approach business education differently than other business-expo education tracks. We will have a special 'how-to' series, but our Flashpoint panels will concentrate on moving beyond the nuts and bolts and bringing business wisdom to attendees, he said.
For Flashpoint, Young added, We are also working with and seeking what we call 'presentation partners.' For example, the University of New Haven and the University of Connecticut's Family Business Centers are helping us put together our program on family businesses.
The commercial and industrial division of the Greater New Haven Association of Realtors, CCIM and SIOR groups of real-estate professionals, said Young, will help us provide a quality program and to promote our development and real estate panels more effectively. He added, We expect to announce additional partnerships with tourism, health-care and technology organizations as well.
Scheduled sessions include:
William Raveis, founder of William Raveis Real Estate and creator of the venture capital-backed Home-Link Services Inc., Mickey Herbert, president, CEO, and majority owner of the Bridgeport Bluefish baseball club and a founder of Physicians Health Services, and Gualberto Ruano, CEO of Gennaissance Pharmaceuticals, will discuss what it takes to get a company Ahead of the Curve.
Doug Schwartz, director of the Quinnipiac University polling institute, Ravi Dhar, professor of marketing at the Yale School of Management, and John Bourget, president of Witan Intelligence Strategies, will bring their knowledge of polling and business research to a presentation called What People Think.
Touring Connecticut, a look at Connecticut's growing tourism and meetings industry, will feature Anne Worcester, director of the Pilot Pen women's tennis tournament, Mitchell Grossinger Etess, executive vice president of marketing for the Mohegan Sun resort and casino, and William Mebane, director of development and marketing for Amistad America.
John Santa, CEO of Santa Fuel Inc., Cindi Bigelow, vice president of Bigelow Tea, and Keith Bishop, president of Bishop's Orchards, will shed light on issues surrounding Family Business.
Adam Winstanley of Winstanley Enterprises, developer of the 300 George Street Technology Center, David Clem of Lyme Properties, developer of Science Park, Shelton real-estate mogul Robert D. Scinto and David Beckerman of Acorn Development (see stories, page 1 and page 3) will outline their projects and prospects, as well as the state of commercial real estate on the Nutmeg State in session entitled Develop Connecticut.
Gov. John Rowland's chief spokesperson, Dean Pagnani, and WTNH-TV anchor Keith Kountz will join BNH Editor Michael C. Bingham to discuss how companies, organizations and individuals can Communicate Effectively.
Robert Santy, president of the Regional Growth Partnership, and Jean Stimolo, executive director of Rideworks, will be joined by municipal economic-development officials in a panel designed to put Realtors, developers and business leaders in touch with the latest developments in brownfields, transportation, municipal development and land use issues in Opportunity in the Region.
We're especially excited by the panel for 'E-merging Connecticut Businesses,' Young said. Each participating entrepreneur heads an organization that has received venture capital funding in the past 12 months. Among others, it will include Alexander Richardson, CEO of Netkey (formerly Lexitech), Brad Miller, CEO of Cybergnostics, and Richard Schultz, CEO of Metaserver.
We are looking forward to once again hosting the Southern Connecticut Business Expo, said Anthony Rescigno, president of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. Businesses throughout the New Haven area and the entire state will surely want to be a part of this event, which promises to build on the positive energy established at last year's expo. Add to that the powerful dynamics of the educational series 'Flashpoint' and you have the makings of a first-class event.
