NEW HAVEN - SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC), parent company of the New Haven-based SNET, last month announced its first offering of home networking products for Connecticut customers. These gateways allow customers to share a single DSL Internet connection among multiple computers within the home or small office.
“Home networking enhances the broadband experience,” said Jason Few, SBC vice president, broadband services. “DSL is quickly becoming the key communications link of the future, and home networking builds on that by enabling high-speed Internet access from any computer in the home and providing the ability to share a printer or scanner.
“In the near future,” added Few, “these home gateways will be the platform to deliver entirely new broadband-based content and services - from multiplayer video games, video-on-demand and home monitoring - to virtually any device or appliance in the home. Ultimately, this is how homes and businesses will be wired to the Web.”
The gateways use existing phone wires to create local area networks (LANs), allowing customers to share a single DSL Internet connection and connect PCs, printers, scanners and other devices in the home or small office. In the near future, they will allow an increasing number of personal digital assistants, stereos, mobile phones, intelligent appliances and other devices to be networked.
