HAMDEN - Richard C. Simione, Kathleen S. Held and Ron Larrow, formerly of Simione, Scillia, Larrow & Dowling, have merged with Macca & Gillespie, LLC. The accounting firm, now known as Simione & Macca, LLC, has offices at 4130 Whitney Avenue, Hamden as well as in Newington.
Simione, who has been in the business 30 years, merged with Scillia, Larrow and Dowling in 1995. In 1999 the firm, together with six national accounting firms, merged and sold their individual practices to Centerprise Advisors, based in Chicago. The merger made Centerprise the 13th largest accounting firm in the nation.
Carmen Macca made it clear that the partners were unhappy with Centerprise on several levels, beginning with its vast size and corporate control. And Centerprise is diversifying into areas that the partners are not interested in.
Explaining the move, Macca said: During the past five years a lot of consolidation has occurred in the accounting industry. The competition has become fierce; a lot of capital is needed to stay up with technology, plus hire and retain top talent. Centerprise Advisors focuses on larger corporate accounts and has diversified [its] business to become a multidisciplinary practice. They also want to sell insurance and security products through their affiliation with General Electric. The merger was not compatible with some of the partners from Simione, Scillia, Larrow & Dowling, due in part to Centerprise's large corporate infrastructure.
The former Simione, Scillia, Larrow & Dowling partners are interested in focusing on Connecticut companies, one of the issues that forced the move. All took their staffs with them. According to Macca, the focus of the new firm will be closely held businesses statewide. It is one of two accounting firms with offices in New Haven and Hartford counties.
