WETHERSFIELD - State Labor Department figures for May show that employment in Connecticut increased by 700 jobs during the month, while the unemployment rate rose 0.1 percent to 2.3 percent. The rate for May 2001 was unchanged from the same month a year before, and is 2.1 points below the national rate of 4.4 percent. Non-farm jobs in May totaled 1,701,500, up 6,300 from a year ago.
"While rising joblessness continues to be reflected in the number of new claims for unemployment insurance and in the overall rate of unemployment, Connecticut has still managed to add new jobs in five of the past six months," said DOL Labor Statistics Supervisor Salvatore DiPillo. "Over-the-year increases in non-farm employment have slowed somewhat in recent months, however, in part due to last year's swell of temporary Census workers."
