WESTPORT - Getting food to families in need is a major challenge for rural hunger-relief efforts. Some food banks serve areas as large as 5,000 square miles and do not have reliable vehicles that can reach these remote areas.
In an effort to combat hunger, Newman's Own and the Ford Motor Co. are donating 14 Ford trucks (six from Newman's Own, eight from Ford) to America's Second Harvest Food Banks in rural communities across the country. The first trucks were already being put to use in late June.
At the launch ceremony, Paul Newman, founder of Newman's Own, said the alliance is "the beginning of a compelling and rewarding partnership." According to Robert Forney, president and CEO of America's Second Harvest, the partnership raises awareness to a serious concern in rural America. The poverty rate in rural America is 23 percent higher than in urban communities and in some areas it's nearly three times the national average.
America's Second Harvest is the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the U.S., feeding people in rural, urban and suburban communities. Newman's Own is a line of food products founded by Paul Newman in 1982. The actor donates all of his profits from the sale of these products to charity.
