NORWALK - Applied Biosystems (NASDAQ: ABI) plans to start shipping its next-generation DNA analyzer this month. The maker of equipment used in genetic research plans to release “on a limited basis” its 4000 DNA Analyzer, president Michael Hunkapillar announced on May 7.

The machines are used to sequence DNA. Researchers use them to try to identify associations between genetic makeup and susceptibility to disease, as well as to determine potential responses to drugs.

Applied Biosystems is owned by Applera Corp., formerly PE Corp., which has two operating groups: Applied Biosystems and Celera Genomics Group. The company expects a significant market opportunity to arise from the vast amounts of data yielded by the Human Genome project, Hunkapillar said.
