BRIDGEPORT - Mayor Joseph P. Ganim has named seven business and civic leaders to a new task force to oversee, facilitate and accelerate downtown development in the Park City.
The group will be responsible for trying to help make reality of revitalization projects planned for the city's central business district, Ganim announced April 23.
The main downtown projects, some of which have long been on the drawing boards, include a proposed state criminal and juvenile court facility; a performing-arts center renovated at the closed Palace and Majestic theaters; renovation of the former Read's department store into working and living space for artists; a multi-faceted transportation center; and the prospective redevelopment of Steel Point with a mixed-use project.
This task force, said Ganim, will be asked to address issues pertaining to the success of each of the projects in the months to come.
The eight task force members (seven have been named to date, with an additional appointment to follow) will meet when needed to help facilitate steps for completion of the projects. The group's role is advisory.
Members of the group include Peter Brestovan, first vice president at People's Bank and member of the Downtown Special Services District Commission; Matthew Preston, president of the Bridgeport Design Group and chairman of the Downtown Preservation Task Force; and James Dancy, president of TechniCo-op Inc., and a downtown property owner.
Also named were Ganim's chief of staff, Chris Duby; Iris Molina, head of the city's Social Services Department; John Marsilio, director of the city's Public Facilities Department; and State Sen. Bill Finch (D-22), president of the Bridgeport Economic Development Corp.
