WALLINGFORD - A training program by local manufacturer CiDRA Corp. in partnership with two of the state's community colleges was rolled out earlier this month to help meet the growing demand for workers in Connecticut's growing fiber-optics industry. The program that will train 15 women in fiber optic technology.
CiDRA, which makes components for fiber-optic networks and equipment, is contributing lab space, supplies and equipment to the 12-week, 9.5-credit training program. CiDRA's partners in the program are Three Rivers Community College in Norwich and Middlesex Community College. The classes are taking place at Middlesex's Meriden Center and in CiDRA's laboratories at North Barnes Park in Wallingford.
CiDRA officials say that the fiber optics industry may need as many as 1,000 new workers over the next several years. But because the technology is relatively new, a trained labor force to meet that demand doesn't exist today in the state.
