ROCKY HILL - Beating the drum for the state's small-but-growing bioscience industry, Connecticut United for Research Excellence reported that research-and-development investments in state-based bioscience companies totaled $3.6 billion in 2001, an 18-percent increase over the previous year. The report was released March 26 at Yale.
Biotechnology accounted for the lion's share of R&D investment growth, growing by 437 percent to $277 million during the 1995-2001 period, according to the industry group. Investments in clinical studies grew by 22 percent last year to nearly $512 million, up from $418 million in 2000. Of that, the most significant growth (up 55 percent to more than $41 million from $26.7 million) was recorded in the biotechnology sector.
