Connecticut communities authorized 706 new housing units in February, a 39-percent increase compared to the 508 units authorized in February 2000. However, the 706 units permitted in February represented a decrease of 16.8 percent from the 849 units permitted in January 2001. Year to date, permits are up by 18.6 percent, from 1,311 in 2000 to 1,555 through February 2001.
The Stamford Labor Market Area (LMA) had the largest number of new authorized units in February with 276, followed by the Hartford LMA, with 156. Seven of the ten labor market areas posted increases in new housing authorization compared to a year ago. Stamford posted the largest gain, with 234 units. Norwalk led all Connecticut communities with 248 permits, followed by North Haven with 23 and Hamden with 17.
