Jerome Birnbaum has been named senior vice president of research at Achillion Pharmaceuticals in New Haven. Birnbaum's areas of expertise include antiviral, antimicrobial and anti-parasitic agents, as well as pre-clinical development processes and requirements. He spent 21 years at Merck & Co., where he was vice president of microbiology and agricultural research and director of basic biological sciences. He then joined Bristol-Myers Squibb as senior vice president of infectious diseases, and later promoted to executive vice president in charge of all therapeutic areas. Most recently Birnbaum served as senior vice president for pharmaceutical development at Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Mary Ellen Dombrowski, executive director of Independent Electrical Contractors of Connecticut in Rocky Hill was elected president of the Connecticut Society of Associate Executives. Dombrowski previously served as vice president and has been active on the board of directors and committees.
Alice Prochaska has been named Yale University librarian. Prochaska has served since 1992 as director of special collections at the British Library, the national library of the UK. She has also served as secretary and librarian of the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London. Prochaska received her undergraduate degree from Somerville College, Oxford and her Ph.D. in modern history from Oxford.
Helaine S. Klasky has been named Yale University's director of public affairs and special assistant to the president. Klasky has held senior public-affairs positions with the U.S. Department of Treasury, the State Department and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Most recently, she served at Treasury as deputy assistant secretary for public affairs. Klasky earned her B.A. in political science from the University of California/Berkeley, her master's of international relations from American University, and her master's of education from the University of Virginia.
Terence Elton is the new contact person for the town of Branford's economic-development efforts. He will work with local officials, the Branford Chamber of Commerce and the business community at large to help coordinate and promote the town for new and expanding businesses. Elton was previously employed by the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities in New Haven, where he was responsible for the non-profit's research and information service for more than ten years.
Robert B. Wassung Jr. has joined Fletcher-Thompson Inc. of Bridgeport as senior project electrical engineer for the Engineering Group. Wassung has 20 years of experience in all aspects of electrical design on a variety of project types. He studied engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, where he worked with Stone & Webster Engineering.
Mustapha Kemal, M.D. has been named director of general rehabilitation programs at Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford. He will oversee the medical program of patients in Gaylord's Medical Rehabilitation Division, as well as treat patients with pulmonary disorders. Formerly Kemal was medical director of the Medical Rehabilitation Division at Gaylord Hospital. He is board-certified in internal medicine and psychiatry.
Neato, LLC of East Haven has hired James Raphael as its first chief sales and marketing officer. Raphael's immediate plans are to identify new markets, expand product lines and recruit staff. Raphael brings 20 years of experience in marketing, sales and business to Neato. His previous position was vice president of sales and business development at 4SURE.com. He has also worked at IBM as a U.S. sales manager and business unit executive.
Also at Gaylord, Maureen E. Lopes has been named manager for outpatient business development. Lopes will direct the business and marketing activities of 65 outpatient services. Previously she was director of special projects at Gaylord.
Lucille B. Gentile has joined H. Pearce Co.'s Wallingford regional office as a residential sales associate. Gentile has been a licensed real estate agent for 16 years, and has also worked at the Hospital of Saint Raphael as a registered nurse.
Edward T. Gerhardy has joined H. Pearce Co.'s Madison office as a residential broker associate. Gerhardy has 20 years experience as a real estate broker. Previously, he was vice president of marketing and sales for the Denver Technology Center, a planned community in Colorado.
Also at Pearce, Corrine Lohan has been named senior office administrator at the company's corporate headquarters in North Haven. Lohan comes Pearce from the Lake Compounce Theme Park in Bristol, where she served as administrative assistant of group sales since 1998. Prior to that, she was a legal assistant at the Stewart Title Guaranty Co.
Jean Cherni, founder of Senior Living Solutions, LLC, has affiliated with H. Pearce Co.'s Corporate Services Division as its elder-services consultant. Cherni has 25 years combined experience in marketing and sales and the presentation of training programs and seminars. Previously she served as a retirement community director for the Gables at Guilford. In 1996, Cherni was a delegate to the Connecticut State Conference on Aging.
Arbonies King Vlock of Branford has promoted Michael J. Carafeno to associate. He will be in charge of firm-wide project management and will work on all AKV projects, including the Student Services Center at the University of Connecticut/Storrs campus and the first permanent home for the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History.
Mark L. Boxer has been named senior vice president for e-business at Anthem Inc. of North Haven. Before joining Anthem, Boxer was senior vice president of e-commerce and information technology at Cigna HealthCare in Bloomfield. Boxer also led development of architecture and design for MedUnite. He is an adjunct faculty member and senior industry advisor at the Center for Health Systems Management at the University of Connecticut.
S. Grove & Associates of Hamden has hired Dori Link as a marketing assistant. Link received a B.S. in corporate communications from Southern Connecticut State University in 2000. She is involved with the Hamden, Quinnipiac and Branford chambers of commerce.
