MERIDEN - In a unanimous decision, the Zoning Board of Appeals has turned down a request by G.Q. Associates to open In the Mood, an adult-oriented store, to open at 690 East Main Street. James Anderson, Meriden's zoning enforcement officer, ruled that the store's merchandise, which would include items such as g-strings and warming lotions, make it a sexually-oriented business. Meriden zoning regulations require these businesses to get special exception to open in a C-3 zone, where this store would have been located.
Owner Dan Quinn is appealing the decision. According to Quinn, the store would carry lingerie, gag gifts, adult videos, leatherwear and party supplies. He argued that such items can be purchased in other Meriden stores. Daniel Silver, an attorney who represented In the Mood, contested the results of the hearing, stating that the business is not sexually-oriented. Silver said that under current zoning regulations, the sale of lingerie, oils and costumes are not items that classify this type of establishment.
One of the issues for some residents is the store's proximity to Maloney High School and a family-type ice cream store located also on East Main. The issue is not necessarily finished: Quinn can apply for a special exception from the ZBA as well as challenge the hearing decision in Superior Court.
