Snyder boosted Booth’s reputation, global profile

NEW HAVEN — Yale University President Richard C. Levin has named Edward A. Snyder dean of the Yale School of Management (SOM), effective July 1, 2011.

Currently Snyder is dean and George Shultz Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. Last month, he announced his intention to step down as dean of Booth effective June 30 of this year. Following a year’s sabbatical, he will assume the deanship of SOM in July 2011. Sharon M. Oster will continue as SOM dean during the interim 12 months.

"Ted Snyder is widely regarded as the most successful business school dean in the nation," Levin said. "He brings experience, enthusiasm and vision to [SOM], and he looks forward to maintaining the school’s tradition of preparing students for leadership in business and society by raising their awareness of the context in which business operates.”

Snyder has been dean of Booth since 2001. Under his leadership, the school nearly doubled its endowed professorships and more than tripled scholarship assistance to students. Snyder also expanded the school’s presence in Singapore, and established a new campus in London.

Snyder’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment, with SOM revamping its curriculum and breaking ground on a new campus. Yale administrators hope Snyder will burnish SOM’s reputation and enhance its global profile as he did at Chicago.
Snyder will replace Oster, who stepped into the breach after Joel Podolny abruptly resigned in October 2008 to become dean and vice president of Apple University, the technology giant’s management-training program.

Levin praised Oster for her service to SOM.

"Sharon stepped up without hesitation to the dean’s role last year when my unexpected call came,” said Levin. “She has served the SOM community with a steady hand and unwavering commitment.”

Snyder earned an MA in public policy in 1978, and Ph.D in economics in 1984, from the University of Chicago. He began his professional career as an economist with the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he served for four years.

He began his academic career on the faculty of the University of Michigan business school. Snyder was also dean and Charles C. Abbott Professor at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business from 1998 to 2001.
