HARTFORD-Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is pressing for state legislation requiring local school boards to verify certification requirements for employees of businesses that offer behavioral analysis and special education services to autistic children.
His concern was spurred by the arrest of the operator of Spectrum Kids LLC after a Norwalk Police investigation into autism treatment services allegedly provided by an employee with false credentials. The U.S. Dept. of Education and Blumenthal's office also participated in the investigation.
"It became clear during our joint investigation that there is no state certification or license to ensure that individuals or agencies hired for behavior analysis services meet minimum educational and professional criteria," said Blumenthal in a statement. He said he proposed legislation to correct the oversight after consulting with parents, behavioral experts, and state and local officials.
