MILFORD — Two-term House Speaker James A. Amann has abandoned his bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
His poll numbers mired in the single digits and with a candidate committee reportedly $70,000 in the red, the 53-year-old Milford resident was the only announced Democratic candidate to date. His departure clears the way for two other aspirants with higher statewide profiles.
One of them, Greenwich millionaire Ned Lamont, won an insurgent 2006 U.S. Senate primary campaign against Joseph I. Lieberman (losing the general election rematch to the now-independent Lieberman). Lamont was expect to announce his candidacy February 16 in Hartford.
Another Democrat expected to throw his hat into the ring shortly is former Stamford Mayor Dannel P. Malloy.
