Praxair Separates, Supplies

DANBURY — Industrial gases company Praxair has had a busy month of opening and acquiring new facilities.

The company recently opened two new air-separation plants, one being its first in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which will supply oxygen, nitrogen and argon to Middle Eastern structural steel manufacturer United Steel Co. The new plant has the capacity to produce 350 tons " /#visit_us">visit us oxygen per day, making it the largest air-separation unit in that country.

Another air-separation unit was established in Brazil by Praxair subsidiary White Martins, in the state of Mato Grosso. The unit can produce up to 220 tons of oxygen, nitrogen and argon daily. The unit will provide the gases to Eldorado Celulose e Papel’s single-line pulp mill, which will be the largest in the world. The new plant is Praxair’s fifth in the region.

Praxair also purchased Lawrenceburg, Ind.-based Tri-State Carbonic’s carbon dioxide plant, which produces bulk CO2 for industrial use in the greater Cincinnati area, particularly for food and beverage markets, fire-prevention and welding.

 

Sturm Ruger Sticking it Out

SOUTHPORT — Firearms manufacturer Sturm Ruger is not among the firearms companies looking to leave Connecticut any time soon.

In the wake of new gun legislation " ">valium the critical words by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, Southport-based Sturm " /#cheap_valium">cheap valium is planning on staying in Connecticut due to its having a small headquarters and a solid set of engineers here. The company will, however, continue to expand its workforce outside Connecticut, including the possibility of establishing a third manufacturing facility — aside from those in Arizona and New Hampshire — of roughly 250,000 square feet.

Bristol gun maker PTR Industries is among the manufacturers that have announced that they intend to leave Connecticut following the passage of the nation’s strictest gun laws in the wake of the December 14 Newtown massacre.

Defibtech Named Top Exporter

GUILFORD — Automated defibrillator maker Defibtech got top honors on Capitol Hill last month.

The company was named Exporter of the Year from ThinkGlobal, which publishes Commercial News USA, the official export promotion magazine of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The company was the sole winner in the medical/scientific product "//#valium_generic">valium generic equipment category, not to mention the only winner from Connecticut or New England.

More than 40 percent of Defibtech’s sales are international.

EAO Rakes in the Awards

MILFORD — Components manufacturer EAO Corp. has earned high accolades from the Frost and Sullivan’s Manufacturing Executive and the Manufacturing Leadership Council.

EAO produces human machine interface "http://www.ninecakes.com/media/buyonline//#cheap_">cheap components such as buttons, handheld controls and keyboard panels. The company received two Manufacturing Leadership 100 Awards (ML100), including the Innovative Enterprise Award for the expansion of its MHI Systems design and manufacturing capabilities. The Manufacturing Entrepreneur Award was given to EAO President Lance A. "http://gp.org/site//#visit_us">visit us.

Other ML100 award-winners this year included Ford, IBM and General Electric.

Spreading Wings in South America

STRATFORD — Sikorsky Aerospace is breaking new territory in South America with the opening of a Black Hawk helicopter training facility in Colombia.

The Flight Simulator Training Center at the Colombian Air Force Base in Melgar is the first of its kind in South America, and provides pilot and flight crew training for the country’s armed services as well as for Sikorsky military customers in the region. The center offers the region’s only Black Hawk simulator.

Also in South America, Sikorsky has begun storing spare parts for Brazil’s model S-76 and S-92 helicopters in a Rio de Janeiro facility, which is the first storage location for the company in Brazil, in an effort to reduce the lag time from customs inspections and clearance issues that come with shipping products from the U.S.

Platt Students Go for Gold

MILFORD — Twelve students from Platt Technical High School took home gold medals from the Connecticut Skills USA competitions at Prince Technical High School in Hartford in March.

Platt Tech students competed against teams "http://www.ninecakes.com/media/buyonline//#order_"> 16 other trade schools to demonstrate trade and leadership skills in various categories that were then judged by industry professionals and leaders in the state.

Those winners included those in industrial fields such as machining and robotics: Michael Tracs (Automotive); Jesse Pena (CNC Milling); Kevin Pineda (CNC Turning); Laboy Jerrico (Collision); Daniel Blizman (HVAC); Kyle Rivera and Ed O’Brien (Robotics); Dean Manley (Technical Drafting); Pfeifer Jacob (Tech Computer Apps); Xavier Blyden (SC robotics).

First-place winners will continue on to compete in the national skills competition in Kansas City " /files click here June.

NHMA Turns 100

NEW HAVEN — The New Haven Manufacturers Association (NHMA) hits a ".ajor ".ilestone as it turns 100 years old this year.

The regional ".anufacturing advocacy group was founded in 1913 as the E ".ployers’ Association of New Haven County, a group of co ".panies that ".et regularly to help foster business growth. The NHMA now represents ".ore than 12,000 workers in the area, and helps connect ".e ".bers with resources, lobbies for legislation, provides networking opportunities and workforce-develop ".ent activities, and pro ".otes ".anufacturing education in schools and universities.

There are 5,000 ".anufacturers in Connecticut that e ".ploy ".ore than 200,000 people.

The NHMA has events planned during the year to co ". ".e ".orate its centennial, including a June 1 radio discussion featuring Joe Vrabely, founder of Atlantic Steel &a ".p; Foundry in Waterbury.
