95 group to benefit from bank’s charitable arm

BRIDGEPORT — For the fourth quarter of 2012 the People’s United Community Foundation has awarded $610,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations throughout the communities it serves in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Ninety-five organizations received funding in support of programs that ranged from basic needs services and affordable housing projects to education and job-training initiatives. The funding was distributed within the foundation’s three areas of focus: 32 percent allocated to community development, 31 percent to youth development, and 24 percent to affordable-housing initiatives. The People’s United Community Foundation also contributed 13 percent of its funding to local United Way organizations as a matching donation to the People’s United Bank annual employee giving campaign.

“People’s United Community Foundation is delighted to grant to a record number of non-profit organizations during the fourth quarter, as well as for the year,” said Vincent Santilli, the foundation’s executive director. “The foundation not only received the highest number of funding requests in its five-year history, but as a result, we also awarded more grants this year than ever before. We are very pleased to continue our support of many recurring grantees and for the opportunity to welcome new community partners as well.”

For 2012, People’s United Community Foundation distributed 346 grants within the communities it serves, totaling more than $2.2 million. Since inception in 2007, 1,209 grants have been awarded to nonprofit organizations, totaling more than $12.4 million.

Established in 2007, People’s United Community Foundation was formed to help support programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for citizens in the communities that People’s United Bank serves. People’s United Bank, founded in 1842 and serving customers from New York to Maine through a network of 418 branches, is the largest independent bank headquartered in New England.
