NEW HAVEN — Everybody knows downtown New Haven offers the best holiday shopping experience in Connecticut. But just in case you’re a skeptic, that intuition has been confirmed by an online poll conducted by NBCConnecticut.com, which on January 8 bestowed its “Golden Local Award for Best Holiday Shopping” on downtown Elm City merchants. The Golden Local poll selects “the best of Connecticut as voted by the locals.” More than 2,800 shoppers went online to vote for their favorite shopping destination. After two weeks of voting, New Haven emerged victorious over West Hartford Center as offering the best holiday shopping.
Online voters cited the Elm City’s eclectic boutiques, great restaurants, world-class cultural venues and special events throughout the year. The Chapel Street and Broadway Merchants Associations went all out this holiday season to deck the halls, and New Haven’s windows wowed with live models, the air chimed with carols, and the streets rang with the clip-clop of horse and carriage.
Said Rena Leddy, executive director of the Town Green Special Services District, “Winning the Golden Local sends a positive message across the state that New Haven has weathered the recession well and has a thriving shopping scene.”

It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.
Mohandas Gandhi

Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.
Benjamin Franklin
