NEW YORK - Bloomberg News reports that manufacturing expanded at a faster-than-expected pace in December The Institute for Supply Management's factory index rose to 55.9, the highest level since April 2006, according to the Tempe, Az.-based group. Any number greater than 50 signals an aggregate expansion.

The uptick is a global phenomenon, with European and Chinese manufacturing surveys also showing production gains - the most significant gains in 21 months and five years, respectively.

Confidence and sales appeared to be returning to some companies as inventories rose for the first time since August 2008.
