Pfizer Slims Down, Connecticut Stays Phat

The reshaping of Pfizer Inc. brought on by its $68 billion acquisition of Wyeth hasn't been completely healthy for Connecticut. The world's largest drug manufacturer announced it would close its 750,000-square-foot New London research headquarters operations by the end of 2011. The facility reportedly cost the company more than $300 million and is just ten years old. The 1,400 jobs there, however, were transferred to the company's Groton research facility.

In late May Connecticut again slipped the noose as Pfizer announced 6,000 manufacturing job cuts worldwide (Pfizer's total worldwide employment is 116,000), but no cuts to its 5,000-person Connecticut workforce.

Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. As a peacemaker the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.
Abraham Lincoln

It's time to fundamentally change the way that we do business in Washington. To help build a new foundation for the 21st century, we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative. That will demand new thinking and a new sense of responsibility for every dollar that is spent.
Barack Obama
