Praxair Grows, Expands in Midwest

DANBURY — Industrial gases company Praxair is heading to Minnesota.

The company signed a long-term contract with Mesabi Nugget, LLC to build and operate a new plant at Mesabi’s Hoyt Lakes, Minn., click here nugget facility. visit us plant will supply nitrogen to provide an inert atmosphere for various aspects of the nugget production process, replacing previous liquid nitrogen supply.

Mesabi’s Hoyt Lakes facility produces the world’s first and only iron nuggets that are pure enough to meet the pig iron specification for U.S. mini-mill steel production. The plant will produce approximately 50 tons of nitrogen daily and is scheduled to start up by the end of 2012 to support the continued growing demand for iron nuggets.

Praxair also recently acquired Acetylene Oxygen Co. (AOC) of Harlingen, Tex. AOC is a distributor of Praxair gases and is one of the top ten independent gas and welding products distributors in the U.S., operating 24 locations throughout central and southern Texas, including four cylinder-filling plants.

The acquisition of AOC is expected to further expand Praxair’s packaged-gases presence in Texas, after it bought two independent distributors in the second half of 2011 that serve the Houston area.
