Located in Sandy Hook, Curtis Packaging Corp. is a full-service provider of luxury packaging solutions. The company is completely self-sufficient — from making its own cutting dies to hot foil stamping, embossing, windowing, printing and finishing — and serves a wide range of industries: health & beauty, pharmaceutical, software, liquor, consumer goods, entertainment and sporting goods, and gourmet foods/confections. Since 1845, Curtis has manufactured cartons to global brands including Clinique, Estée Lauder, Origins, DKNY, Elizabeth Arden, Beiersdorf and Titleist.
“We are proud to be the first packaging company in North America to be 100-percent carbon neutral, run our entire operation on 100 percent renewable energy and to be Forest Stewardship Council- (FSC) and Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI)-certified,” explains Donald R. Droppo Jr., who became Curtis’ president and CEO effective January 1. “We are a founding member of Global Prestige Pack — the world’s first luxury packaging alliance with partners in Europe and Asia.”
Curtis has always been an environmentally responsible firm. In 2003, Droppo joined the company and immediately started to investigate and implement numerous environmental initiatives. He was very interested in making Curtis the most environmentally sensitive company in North America and worked closely with John Giusto, Curtis Packaging’s senior vice president of manufacturing.
“Over six years ago, we started a campaign called ‘Beyond Compliance,’” says Droppo. “We looked at every raw material and operation throughout Curtis and devised a plan to take waste out of the stream with the ultimate goal of zero waste. We then created a ‘green team’ to continuously improve upon our stewardship. Within months, the entire company was engaged with various projects — replaced our lighting throughout our entire 150,000-square-foot facility, installed motion detectors, programmable thermostats and even installed waterless urinals.”
Droppo often describes his inspiration of Curtis as “the fusion of Aston Martin and Patagonia. We are committed to doing our part as good corporate citizens to help the environment. We know that our customers and the community value the significant commitments we’ve made to a safe and secure energy future. In short, it’s the right thing to do.”
Curtis has committed to purchasing 4,524,800 kWh of renewable energy per year — enough to cover 100 percent of its energy usage — for the next three years. The majority of Curtis’ renewable energy mix is wind power, and approximately 30 percent of the purchase includes locally generated wind and hydro.
“Paperboard is our most important raw material,” Droppo says. “As a socially responsible corporate citizen, we always strive to source our materials from sustainably managed forests.”
Curtis was certified carbon-neutral by Battelle Consulting and the Carbon Neutral Co. The company is also an EPA Green Power Partner and won numerous awards including one from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund. Curtis partnered with Herster Barres from “Reforestation of the Tropics” and is a participant in the UN’s Plant a Billion Tree Campaign. And Curtis recently purchased more than five acres in Costa Rica as the goal is to eliminate buying CO2 offsets.
