Date Gov. John G. Rowland has selected Physician J. Robert Galvin as commissioner of the department of public health. Galvin, a retired Army brigadier general, is an attending physician at Hartford Hospital with a private practice in Glastonbury and serves as an assistant clinical professor of family practice medicine at the University of Connecticut (UConn) School of Medicine. He is certified in aerospace medicine and is a senior examiner with the Federal Aviation Administration. Galvin received the Bronze Star and Army Commendation medal for his service in the Vietnam War and the Legion of Merit award upon retiring from the Army in 1991. He earned his medical degree from Tufts University and master's degree in public health from UConn.
