He was a chemistry professor at Purdue University from 1975-90 and was appointed Conkey P. Whitehead Professor of Chemistry at Yale. Jorgensen has been editor of the Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry since 2001 and editor of the Journal of Computational Chemistry since 2002. He earned his Ph.D. in chemical physics from Harvard.
