Engel co-wrote the introductions, wrote essays and edited the books Sam Peckinpah's West: New Perspectives and The Big Empty: Essays on the Land as Narrative. He received the QU's Outstanding Faculty Award in 1990. Engel earned his doctorate in English from Fordham University in 1977.
