UI To Push ‘Smart’ Meters

E-mail Print PDF
NEW HAVEN — The United Illuminating Co. said it soon will be ready to install “smart-meter” technology in some homes of consumers of UI and other electric energy providers. The new meters are at the center of a national debate on the use of new technology to price electricity.
The idea behind the smart meters is to charge more for electricity when demand increases, encouraging consumers to cut usage during peak hours. The smart meters report usage by the hour to the utility company and to the home or business owner.
UI hopes the use of smart-meter technology will help customers know how much they are spending on their electricity. By allowing the company to alert customers when they hit a certain dollar amount — say, $100 — that can reduce the number of uncollectible accounts.
Connecticut regulators will begin holding hearings on the matter during the coming legislative session.
