The workshops are sponsored by the state's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism and Boston Green Tourism. They are funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through a grant to Boston Green Tourism.
Last summer, DEP and Culture & Tourism announced a self-certification program called "Connecticut Green Lodging." The program encourages and recognizes lodge owners who implement environmentally friendly practices, such as taking steps to conserve energy and water and using toxin-free cleaning products.
The workshops are scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon at the following dates and locations: March 18 at the Study at Yale, 1157 Chapel Street, New Haven; April 1 at Saybrook Point Inn & Spa, 2 Bridge Street, Old Saybrook; and May 6 at the Norwalk's Maritime Aquarium.
The topics at each session include: energy efficiency, water-use reduction, waste management and how to earn Green Hospitality certification or recertification. Each session will also feature a Connecticut hotelier speaking about her or his own experience greening a property and operations.
These workshops will be followed by an advanced green training session for the lodging industry to be held this fall.
