SAO PAOLO, BRAZIL: Business newspaper Valor Economico reports that Pfizer Inc. is in "advanced talks" about acquiring Laboratorio Teuto Brasileiro a generic drug manufacturer that last year generated $171 million in sales. Neither Pfizer nor Teuto are talking publicly about the deal for now In a potentially related development, Brazil's top court ruled in late April that Pfizer's patent on Viagra will expire next month in that nation. The patent argument is based on what was the controlling year of patent, 1990 in the UK or 1991 under the European Patent Office. The ruling opens up the product for generic drug producers to sell copies of the drug, penetrating what has been a $200 million annual market. Pfizer has previously reported that Brazil is the third-largest market for Viagra sales. Estimates are that prices will be reduced by up to 50 percent.
